SPLINTERLANDS: Flying Squid out of the water survives an earthquake for the win

Although Flying Squid is not truly capable of flight, their moniker comes from their ability to launch themselves from the water and glide above the surface for long distances before resubmerging. These aggressive predators shoot ink into the eyes of their prey to blind them before attacking with their lengthy tentacles. “

Splinterlands Lore

stats.png

I don’t think I’ve ever used or noticed the Flying Squid until today. It has an interesting ability at level six, blind. It also has the reach ability from the get-go and a decent amount of life so it can function as a good secondary tank. I doubt I ever max this card out for its backfire ability because it’s a bit pricy at ten cents a card, but I’ll try to get it up to level six soon. I’ve been kind of a bottom scraper recently and getting as many cards under a penny as I can. It’s actually been cheaper maxing out some rare cards than common ones because common cards need 400 to max out, while rares only need 115.

mybattle.png

I usually select on the abilities box and choose the flying ability or use the dragon summoner who grants everybody flight when there’s an earthquake, but I thought my Sea Monster and its self-healing ability would be enough to win this wild battle.

How are you liking the new Wild -vs- Modern formats? At first, I thought that it would be a piece of cake to level up in modern, but I’ve found I do much better in the wild format. Since the collection power to get to the Diamond league is half of what it is in wild, I’ll still keep trying, but I’ll take a few days off to let the competition get a bit weaker. I’ve noticed that if you feel you are getting smashed, it’s best to take a break for a day or two then you can do much better plus your capture rate will be at 100%. Splinterlands is one of the few places where procrastination can be a good thing.

end.png

Even though the Flying Squid can’t actually fly, it had enough life to survive the earthquake and was the last card standing.

It’s raining diamonds at CoinMarketCap!

How are all you fellow crypto and NFT freaks doing today? I know I don’t need to tell you about CoinMarketCap because they’re one of the OG websites in the crypto game, but you may not know about their daily diamond giveaway.

cc.jpg

Just like you, if I type just the letter C into my address bar, it will suggest CoinMarketCap and then CoinBase, but I’m here to suggest that you start checking your coins from your phone rather than your PC from now on…

list.jpg

The best thing about checking coins from the app -vs- the website is that it only shows the coins that YOU care about. I don’t give a fuck that ETH is a popular coin. I hate it. I don’t want to see it. I hope it fails. That’s like, my opinion man. When you push on the star icon, it remembers that it’s a coin you like and it will only show that.

collect.jpg

Most of us probably check CoinMarketCap every day anyway so we might as well collect some diamonds each time we do right?

What good are these diamonds anyways?

Right now, to be honest, they are pretty worthless. If you take a look at the NFTs that you can redeem the diamonds for, they all suck. I want a Batman or Iron Man NFT, but right now what they are handing out is crap. Whatever. One day a cool one that you will like will come along and by that time, you’ll have collected thousands of diamonds and will easily afford the one you want.

security.jpg

Whoever invented the “click on all the images that show a bus” security verification should burn in hell. Seriously, if I come across a website that does that shit, I will block it and never visit it ever again, but this slide the puzzle piece into place one isn’t so bad.

rever.jpg

If you can refer your friends, you’ll get even more diamonds. I doubt I get any referrals from ya’ll, but it’s worth a shot, right? What kind of NFTs do you want?

Battle of the Antoids – Learning from our defeats

How are you doing fellow Splinterlands warriors? Are you taking advantage of this bear market? If you check out some of the cheapest cards on the market now, you can get cards for less than a cent. That means you can max out cards for less than $4 now. I personally love it. I’ve never been able to max out so many cards for so cheap. I think the team’s move to have a wild and modern format is a beautiful idea. If things remain how they are now it isn’t fair. If you’re an OG player you may be mad that the old cards that you HODLed for so long are getting smashed by the newer cards and if you’re a newer player, it can be frustrating going up against old cards that seem invincible and way out of your budget, but both sides should be happier when the choice is given to battle in either wild or modern formats soon.

stats.png

The Antoid Platoon gets interesting at level six when they have the scavenger ability where they will gain health when either an enemy or friendly warrior dies. Even at level one, they can be useful with the shield ability which reduces melee and ranged damage. I don’t know if I’ll ever max this card out, but I plan to get it up to level six soon. It would cost about the same to level up the standard card as it would the gold foil version, so I’ll go with gold.

firelover.png

One of the biggest mistakes I think players make is rushing into battle before checking out the enemy. I could see my enemy loved using the fire splinter and only had a level two summoner so I thought I’d smash them for sure using my powerful dragons.

mybattle.png

I put my Antoid Platoon out front while my enemy used them as a secondary tank. I love using Quix the Devious because he’s a strong dragon summoner who reduces the enemy’s speed and ranged attacks, but my enemy didn’t use any ranged attacks, and speed didn’t make much of a difference in this fight.

mid.png

I was surprised to see my enemy smash up my team because they were using all common and rare cards while I had much better and more expensive cards, but they used the ruleset and had a better strategy than I did.

end.png

Even though my card was legendary, it couldn’t do any damage to their Antoid Platoon because it was demoralized by their Disintegrator.

Antoid Platoon.png

Thanks for reading about my battle today. Even though I lost, it was still a learning experience. It also shows what a great game Splinterlands is. Even though I was using twice the power of my enemy, they had a better plan and deserved to win. I don’t think I’ll ever put my Antoid Platoon out front ever again unless it’s a battle where only 4 mana and fewer cards are allowed. What about you? Which strategy and cards would’ve you used?

SPLINTERLANDS: Archers -vs- Dragons

Howdy fellow Splinterfolks. Today I’d like to share my battle for this week’s battle challenge using the Xenith Archer.

The Xenith Scale is devoted to enlightenment, knowledge, and the protection of others. Members among the order practice to remain balanced in all things and believe Mana, too, should remain balanced. It should not be used to cause chaos or disorder, nor should it be used to tip the scales of justice in either direction. The order believes in fate and that everything has its proper place. Fate and destiny are predetermined, and they should not be altered. Archers adhere to this creed in their everyday life. They often say, an arrow must be perfectly balanced on a bow string to hit its mark. If it sits too far forward or too far back it won’t be able to sail through the air. Like all Xenith warriors, archers would much prefer to find a peaceful solution to a problem or stay out of an altercation altogether. When they are pulled into a fight, they see it as a way to restore balance to a situation.”

Splinterlands lore

stats.png

The Xenith Archer doesn’t have any abilities other than being beautiful. She can be useful if you need to use a low mana card during a battle in which only even cards are allowed.

mybattle.png

This was a battle where all cards lose their abilities so I chose a fast tank and some archers while my opponent chose to rely on magic and dragons.

Furious Chicken.png

I put the Furious Chicken out front to absorb the first strike. My opponent had the same idea with the Gargoya Scrapper.

Phantasm.png

The Phantasm is pretty fast so it got a few strikes in before the enemy killed it too.

half.png

After their Diamond Dragon was dead it was my three archers against their Void Dragon.

Corpse Fiend.png

Since it was also a battle where melee cards can attack from anywhere, my Corpse Fiend was able to get a few strikes in and take up the front spot for a while so the archers could do their job.

end.png

Dragons and magic cards usually win, but not today. This battle was won by the archers.

SHARE YOUR BATTLE – DRAGONS

It’s time for another weekly Splinterlands battle challenge and I’m happy to see it’s using dragons again. I think if I ever get to the point where I have a MAX level summoner, it will be a dragon because they can call upon any splinter. I remember MAXed summoners selling for $50 last year before everything blew up. I highly doubt that day will ever come again. If you could have any summoner at MAX level which one would it be?

mybattle.png

I’m a Gold-level player so I need all of my summoners to be at level 3 and above, but I was able to win using my level 1 dragon summoner, Brighton Bloom, who gives everyone the ability to fly.

Brighton Bloom.png

This summoner comes in handy during earthquakes. Even though my enemy was using a level 3 summoner they lost because only two of their monsters could fly.

Wave Brood.png

I used to get angry whenever I’d lose a battle, but now I’ll either learn from their strategy or if I’m really impressed, invite them to my guild. That’s how I got the idea of putting Wave Brood out front. Even though it’s a ranged attack card, it can attack while in the front and also has the taunt ability so most of the enemy cards will attack it. This gives your other cards a good chance to attack without taking any damage until the Wave Brood dies.

Chaos Dragon.png

The Chaos Dragon is a powerful must-have card. It has a strong magic attack with the scatter ability hitting random targets. Its shields and strong life make it hard to kill too.

Djinn Oshannus.png

Djinn Oshanus is one of my favorite water cards from the Chaos Legion. You’ll get this card for free eventually because it’s a reward card.

Nerissa Tridawn.png

Nerissa Tridawn is a beautiful and strong magic card. I’ll make sure to include her anytime there is a high mana battle.

Venari Wavesmith.png

Venari Wavesmith gives everybody on your team more shields as long as she’s alive so you don’t want her out front, but you don’t want her in the rear either because it’s likely your enemy will be using sneak attacks.

Torrent Fiend.png

I put the Torrent Fiend in the rear to absorb a few sneak attacks before they killed my Venari Wavesmith taking down everyone’s shields. Fiends are great for all splinters because they don’t use any mana and can mean the difference between victory or defeat in evenly matched battles.

Silent Sha-vi

Silent Sha-vi are entities from the shadow realm that take the form of giant snakes. They travel in darkness and shadow as if each dark corner is a gateway that leads elsewhere. They have an appetite for slow and creeping deaths, feeding off the escalating fear of the victim. If you think there might be a monster under your bed, it’s probably a Silent Sha-vi.”

Splinterlands Lore

battle.png

What’s up fellow Splinterlanders and Splintercurious? Today I’d like to share another battle victory with you using the Death card, Silent Sha-vi.

stats.png

I can’t remember using this card before, but it helped me win this battle today. I got it while opening packs and even purchased a gold foil version, but many cards have the sneak ability, so I’ve passed it by until now. Plus, I’m a player who relies heavily on magic attacks and my Death deck isn’t the best. It’s a cool-looking card and has the cripple ability at level 6 and piercing when maxed.

battle2.png

Diemonsharks can be hard to beat with their speed and shields, but I didn’t lose a single card in this battle. I put my Cursed Windeku out front as the tank card because it has the thorn ability. The Shadowy Presence and Furious Chicken were just rear buffers and the Silent Sha-Vi helped finish off my enemy’s rear card and the Diemonshark. Thank’s for reading about my Splinterlands battle victory today. HONKAI IMPACT 3rd – Is it worth the storage and loading times?

If you can get Genshin Impact to work on your device, then I’d suggest that way over this three-year-old predecessor, but if your device is out of date it’s the next best thing. miHoYo made this game first so you may see some similarities and even the same characters as Genshin Impact, but they are completely different games.

If you’re a fan of anime, then you may enjoy playing this game as much as I have. It has a smash-em-up fast-action arcade feel to it.

world.jpg

The open-world part of the game is quite fun, but it’s a bit disappointing not seeing any updates or expansions. Hopefully, miHoYo makes a sequel soon and lets us interact with each other and NFTs in some kind of metaverse. They had a great idea for a game, but it just feels unfinished, forgotten, and a bit beta.

Who’s your favorite?

Mei.jpg

I can never remember which kind of character is better suited to attack which other characters, but if you make a team with a good variety and jump between them you can figure it out pretty quickly. Using the wrong kind of attack on bosses can sometimes take up to ten times as long.

sword.jpgtarget.jpgrun.jpgclose.jpg

The cutscenes are pretty entertaining. I took all of these screenshots while playing on my phone and cropped them with Google Photos. All of the YouTube videos are from my Conversation Gaming channel.

openspikes.jpgend.jpg

So is Honkai Impact 3rd worth a large amount of storage and long loading times?

It’s hard to say how much space this game will eat up because there are so many options, but it will eat up a few gigs to run properly. It will take forever to load in the beginning and anytime you log back in, but once the game is going it can be a pretty fun experience if you’re on a mobile device. I rate it four out of five stars for a mobile game.

CROC ARCHER

Hello everyone. I’ve tried participating in past Splinterlands art contests before, but I wanted to create my own character this week. I think the Croc Archer would make a good Epic card with both melee and ranged attacks that shatter magical shielding and causes double damage to magical enemies.Grund.png

After looking through the list of cards, I noticed there was only one crocodilian creature, Grund, so I thought he could use a friend.

The Crocodilian Archers of Praetoria are both rare and ancient. Their raw strength allows them to shoot large steel arrows that no human could ever handle. They are also tipped with dark energy crystals that can shatter magical armor and cause massive damage to magical enemies. Their royal armor and thick skin make them resistant to ranged and melee attacks, but they can be hurt by magic. If they ever find themselves on the frontlines of battle they can also kill with their claws, tail, and deadly jaws.

-Possible Splinterlore

crocodile warrior.jpg

I did a Google search for “crocodile warrior” and really liked this work by Anthony Argentin so I used it for inspiration. It really helped me get the head right, but I went with stumpier arms and legs.

20220512_105305.jpg

My first sketch was awful, so I crumpled it up and tried again.

20220512_111337.jpg

I liked the head on my second sketch, but I wasn’t sure what to do with the arms. If this ever got made into a real card I think him pulling for an arrow and then shooting it would make for a cool animation.

20220512_115849.jpg

I decided on drawing him with an arrow already out so I could show it was tipped with a dark energy crystal.

20220512_124717.jpg20220512_131629.jpg

I had a box of colored pencils that have never been used, so I decided to sharpen them and add color early on.

20220512_132929.jpg20220512_141806.jpg20220512_155743.jpg20220512_162009.jpg
20220512_162422.jpg

In my last drawing, I thought I’d just do a bit of penciling and then do all the coloring digitally, but using the colored pencils first was more fun. I also got another drawing to add to my wall.

pexels-photo-7323158.jpeg

I really liked this swamp photo by Ray Bilcliff on Pexels.com because I could use the leaves on the bottom to cover the croc’s feet which I was unhappy with while giving it a layered feel. Even though it’s a real photo, I thought it had a bright cartoonish look that would mix well with my croc.

Screenshot_20220513-001922_Sketchbook~2.jpg

I just used the technical pen tool and the smudge tool in Sketchbook. I smudged each scale from the outside towards the center then went back and drew the dark green lines again.

D5zH9SyxCKdAD9rYwjD1VARAikGgLpZReGTopGBFuEPFrFTJ8QRWBa6EVbMyD25ZxBamvS8pPXryVqTVWSgJ3MQJjwT8Yj3UaiuZSFrwYmF83jpDipY8nrjJXkzwcWRe31pq4a~2.pngScreenshot_20220512-190513_Sketchbook.jpg

I added a picture of a dark energy crystal and used the lasso select tool to copy and paste it to the tip of his arrow. I had to smudge out the smaller crystal, but it mixed well with my drawing. The original pencil flames looked fine so I just stuck with that and blurred it a bit.

b324fefb-64a0-4e6f-b17d-72417dc7e97d(1).pngb324fefb-64a0-4e6f-b17d-72417dc7e97d.png

I had a lot of fun drawing this. I spent a few hours on the pencil drawing, but it took me a few days to finish up the digital part. I don’t know why I chose a square canvas. It made it harder to share as a thumbnail, but I just cropped it to a 5:4 format and it worked fine. Thank you for reading about my Croc Archer today. Have a good one!hiveline.png

The Sacred Unicorn – SPLINTERLANDS art contest #188

Hello everybody. Today I’m happy to share with ya’ll my entry for this week’s Splinterlands art contest of the Sacred Unicorn. I usually participate in the Splinterlands weekly battle challenge, but I was inspired to do some drawing this week too.

I’ve been stuck in the country of Laos 🇱🇦 (It’s next to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China.) since one day after my 40th birthday on March 27th, 2020. I had just applied for my work visa when they shut everything down. They said it would be for just two weeks, then two months, now it’s been over two years.

Phousi.jpg

I live in the wonderful town of Luang Prabang which is a UNESCO world heritage site so I don’t have any complaints, but I’ve also been unemployed for quite a while. I was a teacher for a long time, but I started working at a hotel in 2018 and I decided that hospitality was what I wanted to do, then BOOM, Covid-19 came along. I was in the military when I was young, but I got out in 2015 so my GI Bill benefits expired a while ago, but I saw an email from the VA (The Veterans’ Administration) that I could get some job retraining so I took them up on their offer. Most of the jobs were for things like hospital work, welding, truck driving, and other technical jobs, but I noticed that they had a certificate in digital illustration so I chose that.

Most of my classes were about Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I felt that my teachers were just shills for Adobe and for buying a MacBook. Since Laos went lockdown crazy, I couldn’t find a new computer if I wanted to. I also only had an income of $285 for my disability compensation from the VA, so there was no chance in hell I was ever going to afford a brand new computer anyways. It took me a while, but I figured out how to get both programs to work on Linux on my piece of junk old PC with a little help from the Pirate Bay. I wouldn’t recommend it though. It was a total pain in the neck and I could only get 2012 or 2015 versions to work. Overall, I feel disappointed in my learning experience. Online classes just plain suck. I need to be IN the classroom. I need to be able to raise my hand and ask the teacher for help. I will NEVER take an online course as long as I live.

first sketch.jpg

One thing I did find useful from my course was my teacher saying that most digital artists still use good old paper and pencil to get started and then scan to Photoshop so that’s what I did. Since the whole NFT market is crashing I wanted to make fun of some of the other NFT projects I have tried but didn’t care for like CryptoKittiesAxie Infinity, or NBA Top Shot.

my battle.png

The Sacred Unicorn may no longer be the best card for using in Life battles, but it’s still my favorite card so I thought I’d do a few rough sketches and see how it went, but I was happy with the first try and just kept on going with it…

1.jpg2.jpg3.jpgWall of Art.jpg

I felt it was time to move from pencil to Photoshop so I added my pencil drawing to my wall of inspiration. If I ever become a famous NFT artist, I’ll mail someone the original pencil drawings. (That’s a big IF right?)

pexels-oleg-magni-1235398.jpg
source

I went to Pexels and did a search for: SKY BACKGROUND and really liked the photo by Oleg Magni. I later got so frustrated with Photoshop that I gave up, quit, and decided it just wasn’t going to work out. I really miss my iPad and the wonderful program of ProCreate so I did a Google search for an alternative and came up with SketchBook. It took me all week to get used to it and to draw the Sacred Unicorn but I absolutely love SketchBook now.

my pen.jpg

Another problem I had was that NOBODY in Luang Prabang sells or has even heard of a stylus so I had to make my own. You can read my post: DIY: Make your own STYLUS pen at home if you want or need to do the same.

first.jpg

Now that I had my trusty DIY stylus and a good digital art program it was time to get crackin. I tried making the NBA ball in Photoshop, then in Illustrator, then in the Linux versions of Gimp and Inkscape but found it too difficult. The only thing I did with Photoshop was put the pencil drawing over the background image, but if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t have used Photoshop at all and just saved the background image as exactly that in the layers menu in SketchBook. I could probably draw this whole picture all over again in a day if I had to re-do it, but I had fun drawing it which is something I haven’t felt in a long time and I also learned a lot from my mistakes so it’s all good.

layers.jpg

If I had been better at using layers, I would have had a much easier time doing this, but I’ll do my next drawing much faster and smarter.

predictive stroke.jpg

I absolutely love the predictive stroke tool in SketchBook and how you can adjust the level of AI-assisted drawing from 1 to 5. It was a better experience than using either Photoshop or Procreate in my opinion.Sacred Unicorn (1).png

Here is the original Sacred Unicorn image from Splinterlands. I used the eye drop tool and the undo tool about a million times. I used the eye drop tool to get the colors right from the kitty, axie, and unicorn, but I’m proud to have drawn this image myself without any tracing. I used to just put an A4 piece of paper over the original Splinterlands art, do a rough trace, then pencil and ink my drawing. Although it is good practice for getting your shading and inking down, it’s still cheating, right? Thanks for reading about my original drawing today. I’m looking forward to doing another sketch. Which Splinterlands card should I use for inspiration next?

My Lovely DRAGONS help win another SPLINTERLANDS brawl!

How is everyone doing today? I’m happy to share with you another entry for this week’s battle challenge. I defeated my enemy while losing only one card and got a win for my team because of my dragon cards here.

Brighton Bloom.png

Since this was a battle during an earthquake I needed to use Brighton Bloom because he gives everybody the ability to fly and they won’t be losing two hit points each round. I have my Fire, Water, Earth, Life, and Death summoners at level 3 while Brighton Bloom is only at level 1, but no one else is as useful when the ground shakes.

Djinn Chwala.png

Djinn Chwala is one of my favorite cards because when enemies attack with melee they will hurt themselves by two points because of his thorn ability. He has decent shields, so he can take a few arrow shots, but he is susceptible to magic attacks. If you equip him with a healer and armorer he can be unstoppable though.

Naga Assassin.png

I like speed. I’ll have my cards arranged the fastest ones first when choosing my cards for each match and the Naga Assassin is fast even at level 1.

buy.png

When looking for the lore art to make this post I noticed some whale (probably a bot) is selling a bunch of maxed-out Naga Assassins for less than $8 so I added $10 of credits from PayPal, bought her, and a few more at level 1 to level up the one I already had at level 2 to level 3 for a few cents.

rent.png

I’m too far away from the 150,000 power needed for Gold II, so I’ll just rent her out and forget about her for a while.

rented fast.png

I won a gold foil version of her a while back and don’t have any Dragon summoners who can summon level 3 rare cards, let alone a maxed-out one so they will be better served as DEC collectors than warriors for now. I locked them and put them on the rental market and they were rented out immediately. Thanks for reading about my Splinterlands battle and journey today. Have a good one!splinterlands divider.png
